THE HISTORY OF STRASETTIMO
It all started with this unlikely flyer:
It was 2007, there were still two routes of 10 and 4 km, in the starting line you could try out rollers and the prizes for the category winners were:
Coming to more recent years, how can we fail to remember the Strasettimo for Amatrice… the chronicles of the time tell:“A representative of Atletica Settimese participated in the famous Amatrice – Configno foot race on 20 August, the event that marks the rebirth of the places hit by the earthquake in 2016. This year’s StraSettimo was dedicated to Amatrice and the funds raised with the race, around 12 thousand euros, will also be used to revive those devastated areas. In particular, in agreement with the mayor of Amatrice, we are thinking of using that amount to purchase snow blowers in view of the arrival of winter. The delegation of seventh grade runners was made up of the mayor Fabrizio Puppo (reaching 645th place), Dino Sportiello (925th), Gaetano Anastasi (456th) and Sara L’Epee (387th). “The red zone of Amatrice is a pile of rubble controlled day and night by the military. In a year, nothing was done – recalls Sportiello –. There are red signs, reading “No Selfies, buffer zone”. Unfortunately, we are such a country. But it was exciting to pass by the housing modules and hear the people cheering the runners on and thanking them loudly.” Some StraSettimo t-shirts were given as gifts to the top runners of the race. The event involved many internationally renowned runners such as Kemboi, Kenyan national and athlete symbol of the history of African sports, and the blue glories Gelindo Bordin and Stefano Baldini.Bruno D’Alessio, organizer of the race and guest in the city during the StraSettimo, was there to welcome the seventh graders. “We met with the mayor of Amatrice, Pierozzi – says mayor Puppo – and the need to think about next winter also emerged. There they are a thousand meters above sea level and when it snows there are problems. So, with the money from StraSettimo we are looking into purchasing snow blowers to clear the corridors of the housing modules. Furthermore, they will also be useful in the future, when the emergency is over.”
Another memorable edition, that of the collaboration with MaraToma. The overall first place men and women won their weight in cheese!
Returning to a paragraph from the time, one still has to smile at the particularity of what was achieved…
” This year StraSettimo will in fact collaborate with MaraToma and the result of this union will lead to having not only a goody bag with very interesting gastronomic contents, but above all in the refrigerator of the first 3 men and women classified…drumroll…..a cheese prize linked to one’s weight.
You got it right. The male and female winner will take home 100% of their weight transformed into cheese, for the second the percentage will be 50% and 25% for the third…
And the awards ceremony will be unique. A scale on stage will be used to measure the winner’s weight counterbalanced by the corresponding toma shapes…
Aspiring winners are warned… just one fridge won’t be enough… 😉”
